Magical Girl (魔法少女 mahō shōjo, also said or known as  mahou shoujo or majokko) is a sub-genre of anime and manga. They feature a normal girl who commonly learns how to use magical powers. It is a popular genre in Japan.

HistoryEdit

Osamu Tezuka wrote a manga called Princess Knight, which was published by Kodansha. It was a Japanese manga that had four installments from 1953 to 1968. In 1967, there was a children's animated series on it. Princess Knight is regarded as a prototype for the sub-genre. Himitsu no Akko-chan was written by Fujio Akatsuka and serialized in Ribon from 1962 to 1965. It was regerded as the earliest manga for the magical girl sub-genre. In 1966,  Sally the Witch, another manga in the magical girl sub-genre, recieved an anime adoption, making it the first magical girl anime.
